I need to remove the quarter-berth panel to replace my muffler. My question is, does that panel provide structural strength? If I remove it, can I still sail or not? thanks,

Depending on your year and size, you do not need to pull this to replace the muffler. You can pull out this panel as there is nothing it supports on the 79 30' I changed mine by sending a small person (5' 5" 165lbs), down the lazerette to do the dirty work. Replaced with Vetus water lift and new muffler. Do not forget to change-out the exaust hose and while someone is down there, change-out the scupper hoses. Also check and lube the helm / rudder controls. The work is pretty straight forward once you get over the price of the hose and the muffler. Good luck

Muffler Replacement

On my 1980 Hunter 30, I found it easier to replace the entire exhaust system together. I replaced the original SS in-line muffler with a fiberglass unit after talking to Hunter about their recommendation. The hoses were as old as the muffler, so it was an easy decision to change them also. You can reach over the engine and disconnect the exhaust hose from the mixing elbow. Then reach down into the aft lazarette and disconnect the aft end of the exhaust hose from the thru hull fitting. Then pull the entire system - hose/muffler/hose - forward over the engine and out. Use the old parts to measure the replacement parts and reinstall.

Installing new exhaust.

The quarterberth panel is not structural, and can be removed. I am in the process of installing a new Yanmar 2GM and exhaust on a 1982 Hunter 30 and have removed the panel. What is a good replacement muffler to use? How high above the sea water level should the exhaust hose be arched to keep water from back flowing into the motor when heeled over, or in heave weather. ie. when sailing with the motor is off.

NO NEED TO REMOVE PANEL

THE MUFFLER AND EXHAUST IS A PRETTY STRATIGHFORWARD JOB, AND THERE IS NO NEED TO CUT OUT THE QUARTER BERTH. 90 % OF THE JOB CAN BE DONE IN THE AFT ENGINE COPARTMNET, RIGHT UNDER THE COCKPIT SOLE. FIT THE HOSE TO THE MUFFLER AND STUFF IT THROUGH UNDER THE BATTERY FARM ASSEMBLY. GO TO THE REAR LAZARETTE AND PULL THE HOSE INTO POSITION AND CLAMP TO THRU HULL
