I want to remove the name (or what's left of the name) from the back of my transom. What should I use to get rid if it? It was painted on about three years ago, but it is already breaking down. The last time I waxed the hull alot of paint came off when I buffed. It also make one heck of a mess! I had a blue film all over the transom. Any recommendations? Jack

Oven cleaner

The caustic is a paint stripper and will not harm the gelcoat color/finish. It's what they use to get lettering off trucks. Try a small spot first.

Oven Cleaner!

Jack: Oven cleaner does work! The warmer it is the better. I have found that it may take a couple of applications. When you are done you can use a wet/dry sand paper to clean it up (use lots of water) Then use something like Island Girl products to recondition the glass. Then you are ready to have the name reapplied with either vinyl or paint.

Agree with oven cleaner

I just had to remove some old registration numbers from the hull of my 78 O'day. I tried the Compound suggestion.... it was a very slow go, with little results. I sprayed some Easy Off Oven Cleaner on a rag and the old paint just wiped right off. Then polished it up with some compound and cleaned it up some mineral spirits. Good Luck and Happy Sailing

Make sure you. . .

wear some gloves, like dish washing gloves. The oven cleaner works like a charm, But it also removed some of my fingerprints. (from my fingers not the boat). Chris

Use IG Cleaners on gelcoat, LPU and inflatables.

One of the "tool" like uses of IG pink is removing lettering from boats. It is very gentle. Use on a wamr day with paper towel or (if in a hurry) use the 3M "000" synthetic steel wool pad. THe other cleaner/conditioners (clear or sea glow depending upon gelcoat color) are quite a bit faster acting and will eliminate the "shadow" caused by differential aging of the protected gelcoat. You can also use these products safely (with brain engaged) on durable painted surfaces like LPU or on hypalon or heavyduty vinyl inflatable boats, buoys etc. I have sign painter and (inflatble) boat racer friends who have used these products years in this way - check out the testimonials on www.IslandGirlProducts.com. Would you try the above with oven cleaner (just glycol ether+caustic)? Thanks Jim Willis
