We need to remove the old painted name on our new to us Hunter 37. It is currently located on the Transom. Can anyone reccommend a product that will not damage the hull? Thanks as always for the help, The Doyles S/V Regenero

I did it, I did it

Karen: I did it last summer. Just use OVEN CLEANER (ie: Easy Off). Spray on and leave for 10-15 minutes. Scrub with your deck brush/ rinse and reapply again unit it's done. I did mine 3 times. You may need to use a little paint remover to clean up the remnants. You will also notice that you can still feel a ridge where the name was. This can be sanded with ultra fine sand paper (1500 or finer).

Yesterday

I just did this to my boat yesterday. I had to remove the name from both sides of the boat and the transom. This is what you will need. 1. Easy Off oven cleaner (heavy duty) 2. putty nife (or similar but nothing too sharp) 3. bronze wool (fine) 4. detergent This is how you do it: Spray a few letters at a time with the oven cleaner (be sure to put on a generous amount. What 5 minutes and scrape off the paint. Most of the paint will come right off but there will be some left. Spray more easy off onto what paint is left and wait another 5 minutes. Then take the steel wool and dip it in the detergent mix(I used car wash and water) and scrub the second application. What paint there was will come right off and won't leave a trace. You can do this and it won't harm you gelcoat at all. It was a very easy process. Make sure you bring some beer to help pass the down time while you wait for the oven cleaner to work. Thats all there is to it.
