What have you found works best for removing multiple layers of Cetol on exterior teak trim. I thought about some kind of chemical stripper, but I know Cetol will stain fiberglass. Does anyone know about the stuff called Stripease? (not to be confused with StripTease) Or is sanding the best way to go... Thanks, Charles Duhon www.ArtistryMarineArt.com

Karate Kid.

Charles: Did you ever see the Karate Kid. Sand-on, sand-off. I suggest that you get out the sandpaper and start sanding. You can try chemical strippers but they are expensive and they do make a mess. You can also remove the teak from the boat so the mess could be in your garage or on the dock. Most of the chemical agents work best when the weather is warmer. If you can watch a strip tease while you sand, it would not be quite a boooooring.

Removing Cetol

Steve is correct - sand. If I can make two suggestions: 1) when reapplying cetol follow the label instructions. Three coats. However, when it comes time to recoat, go with the new Cetol Gloss. It's not really clear, but close to it. This way you are not continually adding pigment which, after a time, gives that artificial look. 2) Instead of using Cetol try the Cetol Light; less pigment. I'm approaching the 4th season using the above "system" and the teak still attracts attention. I think Cetol is the way to go with exterior teak if you like the varnish look. Cetol comes very close, with much less prep and maintenance. Pat

Take it off, take it all off!

Yup the best way is to remove all the trim pieces and start sanding away. On the flat pieces I'm using a blet sander because there's a lot of old dead wood I have to go through to get back to the original teak. Varnish or Cetol paint and rebed the trim.

Heat Gun and Scraper.

I struggled last summer with very thick, old Cetol on Destiny's cap rail. Sanding just clogged the paper. I found the best way was with a heat gun and scraper - it softens right up when you heat it, and just lifts off. It was a long tedious job, but looked wonderful when it was all done. Be careful not to burn anything! Derek

If you can

Remove the teak from the boat and use regular teak cleaner, brightner, and oil. I had no problem removeing the old Cetol this way, it did take 2 coats of cleaner and brass wool but it came clean.

teak work

I used asurface planer I first power washed all wood on the boat then I removed all the wood on my C30 and let it dry inside for two months then I ran it throw the planer in half an hour all the teak was done . Then sanded all the edges and started coating with cetol It looks Like new and the plane makes all the pecies flat again The teak needed to be resealed to the deck antyway .Go easy with the planer take small cuts I did 3 passes on each side it takes off about as much wood as sanding but dose not round over the sides.
