Folks, I have a job that involves removing old "boatlife" calking (polysulfite). Short of using a razor blade and scratching the gel coat, Is there a solvent that will remove it? The package says to use acetone if it hasn't cured but this stuff has been there for 10+ years. Thanks for your help and advice, /Chuck S/V Windsongs H23

Polysulfide Solvents

See if you can find any of these products (oftyen used in Aviation & Tank Coating industries, etc): Cee-Bee “E-1058" (#23158) - A viscous, non-methylene chloride stripper for removal of polysulfide paint system and sealants. Cee-Bee “A-458" (#23055) - A viscous methylene chloride stripper for removal of polysulfide paint system and sealants. GenSolve “530-AG” (Aviation Grade) A chemical stripper designed to remove organic coatings and residues, polysulfide sealants, and many other polymers at low temperatures. Miller-Stephenson “MS-11" Stripping Agent will readily soften and strip most organic systems including epoxies and urethanes. I’m not sure about it’s effectiveness with sulfides.

Old Polysulfide Sealant

I was able to remove the remaining sealant when replacing hatches just by scraping it off with a dull paint scraper. You might also try a Dremel tool with a wire bush wheel and work slowly and carefully. I assume you will be re-applying new sealant over the same area anyway to re-bed the equipment.

Thanks!

Thanks All! I'm plugging these holes and gel coating them because I'm putting a new type of boarding ladder on. The advice (and discount Steve!) are much appreciated. /Chuck S/V Windsongs H23
