Removing keel winch.

I need to unbolt the swing keel winch from it's mount on my Catalina 25 to do some minor repair work on the winch. I don't want to pay for a haul-out for this, and the boat's not due for bottom work anytime soon. I was wondering if I could get away with simply lowering the keel to rest on the bottom with the boat in her wet slip. I'd probably do this on an incoming tide, and should only need a half-hour or so with the winch removed. I've also thought about anchoring out in water deep enough that the keel would not bottom out, but the rocking of the boat in open water would make it more difficult to do the repair I need to do. Any comments or suggestions on these ideas? Oh, another idea just occurred to me; has anyone ever run a line under their swing keel, and secured it such that it would hold the keel up when the winch is released? Thanks for any ideas, Jack

tie it up

Wrap a rope arround the boat to hold the board in the trunk. tie it on deck and you should be fine. dont let it sit on the bottom. could cause lots of problems. putting it down on anchor should not hurt a thing either.

Cactus, That is alot of keel and if the line breaks, that is alot of weight swinging to the bottom of it's arc. Will the keel still rest on the bottom at high tide in your slot? Could you move to a deep water slot while someone else is out to do this work? How deep is the water at your slip? r.w.landau

Good Points

Hm, good points, r.w., thanks. I'm not sure of the max depth at my slip, but there may be another with more depth that I could "borrow". Thanks again, Jack

Swing Keels

I've changd out the hose and the turning ball on my Catalina 25 twice ( boat not in the water). With the boat in the water, I thing there should not be a problem as long as you don't lose the cable while changing the winch. I would put a pair of vice grips on the cable after the keel is full out. There is plenty of extra cable. Just don't damage the hose in the process.
