I'm trying to remove some heavy scratches from some bronze, and I wondered if anyone knew how to best do it. Is there some way to grind or file them off? Sandpaper and emory boards work a little but are not strong enough. Many thanks.

Losing some bronze

You are going to lose some metal of course; try a "flap wheel" sanding device which fits in a drill motor or any other chuck. they come in different grades. I chucked one up in a lathe and polished out an old prop for decoration. It worked pretty good with 120 grit,, then you have to go up through the grit numbers til it is smooth again, finish with rubbing compound.

Dremel

I should think a Dremel tool would do very well for this sort of thing. I used on to make scratches, i.e., engrave the boat's name and date on to the bronze bell. The tool can as easily remove those scratches and polish the metal.

Flap Wheels

Paul's fibre "Flap Wheel" is a good idea. Finish /w "Jeweler's Rouge". For example: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002FSXJ8/msdotcom-20/104-8940201-8427147
