Hello,

We had some major trouble with our A4 this past weekend. For the mechanic wh was on the boat, his initial thought was Piston Rod failure. So it looks like we'll be removing the engine for a complete inspection. My question is this.... can the engine be removed while the boat is still in the water?

My concern being that when we disconnect the propeller shaft from the transmission we may run the risk of it slipping and/or leaking. Clearly I'm not familiar with exactly how the shaft is secured.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks, Jay

Jay, the transmission is connected to the prop shaft with a coupler, two pieces of metal one to the transmission one to the prop shaft. You disconnect the two couplers, and the shaft remains in the boat. You might want to take a look around back there and see how it all fits together. There was a recent long post on cruisersforum.com about a young lady who removed her Yanmar from her Islander 36 over the course of the last month or so to rebuild the engine. Good luck.

Thanks Stu. That is what I figured but I wasn't sure if I had to slide the shaft aft from the coupler to remove the engine. Doesn't look like it from what I've been able to see.

Success! It took us about 4 hours to prepare and physically haul the engine out of the boat while still in the water. Absolutely no issues. In fact, the hardest part was pulling out the Galley Counter and dealing with the DC wiring running to the DC Electrical Panel.

Time to crack the engine and see what's caused the sudden stoppage.
