Am replacing my skylights on my H35. Over the winter I covered cracks in the old lights with duct tape. The tape extended onto the fibreglass topsides. Any helpful hints out there for removing the residue left by the duct tape? Thanks in advance, Rich

Try Goo Gone

Goo Gone is avvaailable in H/W stores, home centers, etc. We keep a small bottle on the boat for such chores. DiSolves It and Goo Off are two other, perhaps stronger, alternatives. We one time put Goo Off in a Goo Gone bottle and it disolved the bottle!

Been There Done That

I just finished recaulking the skylights on my '92 35.5. I too covered the seams with duct tape over the winter. It was a "bear" to get the residue off. But what worked for me was [and I know you have heard everyone's secret formula"]the OS2 solvent that I purchased with the Dow 739 adhesive caulking, which is what Hunter uses to bed the skylights in the first place. The recaulking job came out great, by the way. If you give me a call I will happy to explain the process, some tricks and what you will need. Fred Miller S/V M-Squared 610 834 0884

I used paint thinner

When we shipped our H34 home, the boat yard in Ft. Lauderdale used duct tape to tie the halyards and stuff to the mast. It stayed that way for over a year in my back yard. The first thing I tried was plain old mineral spirits, also known as paint thinner. Only took a couple of minutes. Even worked on the tri-color.

Solvent

One of the best I've found is laquer thinners - soak sections of paper towel, cover the area of glue, and cover that with foil. It keeps the solvent from dissipating in the air and keeps working on the goo.

Thanks to all for their answers

I finished installing the skylights on my H35 and used the technique posted to this web site. (Thanks especially to Fred Miller and his info about the Dow Corning caulk and OS-2 solvent.) The job came out beautifully! Am now using the suggestions about cleaning up the duct tape residue. Got to get the topsides looking as nice as the new skylights from Hunter. Happy sailing. BTW last night was superb sailing on ChesBay. Winds 15-20 kts and pretty steady. Happy sailing!! -Rich

Good ol' WD 40

Does as good a job of removing tape residue and other glues as any product marketed specifically for that purpose, and a better job than some of 'em. Spray it on...let it sit for a few minutes..scrape. Repeat if necessary. Wash with detergent and water and rinse thoroughly after you've gotten it all off.
