Removing drop-down table from salon

I have a 79 H30 and I hate that drop-down table in the main salon. When we bought the boat the table was held in the upright position with a bungee cord. Most attractive arrangement. Has anyone gotten rid of the drop down and installed a fixed table? Do you have pictures? As I see it these are the issues to consider: 1. The bilge 2. To be able to continue to open the port setee to a double bed 3. Passage through the salon to head & v-berth Can it be done?

Another Try

Tammy, glad you find my earlier response even though I lodged it in the wrong place. Not the stove shop, it's the boat yard waaaay down 123; take a right at the elementary school. If it's not raining, I should be there Sat. afternoon or Sunday.

See you there

At the boatyard that is. The Topsham thing threw me as I don't remember seeing a 30 foot sailboat anywhere near the stove shop.

Removable table for Hunter 30

I have a 1982 Hunter 30 with a removable table. It is on Garelick pedestals. This allows the setee to slide out for a wider berth. With the table in place, there is plenty of room to walk around. On my boat, I cut a hole in cabin sole. It is hollow to the port side of the bilge. The table base sets into the floor about three inches.

Richard - do you have pictures of table?

Richard - I just bought an 81 H 30 and I have the pedestals. Where do you stow your table when not in use? Does it unfold into double width? Do you have pics of it in place and stowed? Where do you stow the pedestals? Thanks

Pictures would be great

I saw the layout in Thom's boat this weekend. Boy, I just can't get over how much the interior of the boats changed in just a couple of years. Len, if you have pictures I'd love to see what the interior of your boat looks like. I promise to post photos of our boat once we start putting it back together.

We love our drop-down table

My wife and I think that the drop-down table is one of the best features of the Hunter interior. With the table up there is lots of space to sit, change clothes and just move about the cabin. The table comes down only when cannot use the cockpit for meals or to play cards. It is a feature we would like to have or install on our next boat.

love to see picture!

Richard, I would really like to see a picture with the pedestal setup. The table in our boat I feel is one of the weakest spots in the interior. I am very interested in doing the same setup. Thank You!

We like our drop-down table

We have no problem with the drop-down table on our '79 Hunter 30' and prefer it to fixed table. In its upright position, it stays in place with large hook and eye. The legs have velcro tabs to keep them in place as I lower table and unfold. In the down position, you can sit on either berth and eat. We have even used it in the half postion to accomodate passage to the v-berth. Don't give up on the table but loose the bungee cords. Good Luck Ian

Great Picture

I can see the hook very clearly. What length hook did you use? Is there another hook on the other side to secure the table on both sides? I also like your reading light. It's really interesting to see how people personalize their boats. I was thinking of covering the white part of the table with laminate to match the galley counter top. Truth is, we'll probably keep the table as it is. No one has responded that they changed their drop down table for a fixed table. Thanks for everyone's input:)

Ian - Picture of table in the open position ?

Ian - your table look like the setup in the 1980s Catalina 30s. Does your table attach to the bulkhead with a piano (long, narrow type of) hinge? Also, do the two halves attach and open to full size with the same type of hinge? How do the legs work to support the table and how are they kept in place during storage with velcro? I like your setup much better than my fixed table! Len '81 H 30

Based on the layout, I think the table is great.

Tammy: I think you will find that the setup is probably the best compromise for your boats layout. Our H'31 has a cafe style booth (2 facing forward, 2 facing aft). The table is up all the time (like you are suggesting). The H'30 does not really lend itself your boats design. My friend has a bolt & eye that holds his table in place. This makes setup and takedown extremely easy. The real nice part of the H'30 design is that you have a nice large salon when the table is NOT setup.

The verdict is in.....

The table will stay. You're right, the boat isn't set up for a permanent table. Thanks Ian for the picture, I could see the hook clearly & will be installing some on my table. I think I will use laminate that matches gally countertop to cover the white.

Len: re your questions

Len The table is two long rectangles attached with long piano hinge that when unfolded, the two sides lock together to make a flat table. This is attached to the bulk head with a shorter piano hinge of the same type. There are three legs undneath that are also on small hinges so they fold flat inside the two boxes but swing to lock against the bottom of the table when they hit the cabin sole. The velco tabs keep the legs from swinging down when you open the table. One large stainless hook and eye, on the port side(which is about six inches long), keeps the table flat against the bulk head. I have attached another shot of my cabin with the table in the down position. (not a good shot of the table). If you need additional shots, I can take some this weekend, and send to you next week. Good luck Ian imcgain@griffinmail.com

Finally figured it out

The thing about the drop down table that bothered me so much was the white material that it was made from. I liked the fixed tables because they are wood. At one point I was going to insert a piece of laminate but decided against that. Over the weekend I thought that I might get a piece of 1/4 Luan plywood, I've been told that it's mahagony on one side, and use that to cover the white stuff. I can fill in the grain and seal with epoxy & varnish. What do you guys think of that?
