I'm getting ready to haul the boat out of the water for the winter. In the past I have sanded off the old bottom paint. I have been thinking about using a paint remover, it sounds easier. Any suggestions/recommendations will be appreciated. John

Sanding VS Paint Remover

I just sanded my boat back to the original bottom paint and gel coat today. I had planned to use paint stripper from Interlux as recommended by the paint manufacturer. I consulted with the marina that did the haul out and other sailers in the boat yard about the effectiveness of various strippers. All of the people that I asked highly recommended sanding instead of stripping. All of the ones who had tried various bottom paint strippers said that they were very slow, ineffective and even more messy than sanding (If that is possible). Hope this helps... Jerry Smith

Sanding

I agree with Jerry. I've done both and sanding is a lot quicker and does a better job in my opinion. Before you start the job, I suggest you first purchase a good resperator and use it. The dust is quit toxic. No matter how small the hull is, as soon as you get under it, it seems to triple! Take your time and enjoy, it's all part of the fun. Ron

Get a handle on it

Check out the dry-wall sanding equipment. The sanding screens and long extension handle gadgets are available at stores like Lowe's and Home Depot. This helps keep you out of the dust. How about "wet-sanding" ? That'd solve the dust problem completely. It seems that any paint-remover that is environmentally friendly doesn't attack the paint either. Good Luck! Ken S/V WouffHong

The best thing to use to strip the bottom...

...is your checkbook. It's easy, and there's no mess to clean up. Cheers, bob

The trouble with strippers!

A stsrong paint stripper as used over metal has MEK and caustic and also arracks gelcoat!. I am hauling my boat soon and may try my cleaners (IGP ink eg) that is a weak paint remover but does not attack gelcoat- could leave on all nigth or (like gel strip) use under plastic shield. It's my boat so it it won't matter about the results! Jim W

Sand It

I am just about finished with the removal of what was left of the ablative paint on my Spiri 6.5 It took about four full days, a couple of packs of 80 grit paper and a good jitterbug sander. Make sure you wear a RESPIRATOR (not a dust mask)some cotton gloves, and a long sleeve shirt. Sweep up the dust and wash your clothes in warm soapy water outside when your done and then throw them in the wash. You'll look like a smurf but the bottom will be ready for a new coat of paint with only a little more prepatory work.
