Removing and replacing water tanks on H-25

I purchased my H-25 with it's water tanks removed. The opening under the V birth isn't very large. Does anyone out there know of a good water tank replacement option for the H-25. I couldn't find anything at West Marine that would work due to the size of the opening. I think its either 12x12 or 15x15. I'm sure Hunter made something that worked much better than the temporary tanks I'm using now. Also, if you have a metal water tank, how do you effectively clean it? Are there any good, safe chemicals to use? The water comes out sort of brown and I surely wouldn't drink it. And I can't imagine how they got the tank into the space without installing it before the deck was finished. I can't see any way to getting the old tank out to replace it without cutting the deck apart. Any ideas. (Also have a powerboat.) Thanks for your input. Water tank location?

The water tank on my 1975 25 is under the starboard lazerette. It is made of fiberglass and was obviously installed prior to the deck mold. It is glassed to the hull and would be impossible to remove in one piece. If I felt a need to replace, I would probably cut the top off and install new tank inside of old.

Me too Rick

My '74 H25 has it's water tank in the same location as Rick's (starboard cockpit locker). As it turns out, mine does leak. I was going to try to remove the whole damn thing, but maybe now I'll try Rick's method of sawing the top off and inserting a new one inside the old. However, I do notice that the boat leans a little toward starboard when there is water in the tank. It'd be nice if there was a convienient location forward, but not on a 25. Let me know what you decide. I'm still waiting for the damn snow and ice to take a hike. Ike

water bladder?

Hi Janel, On my '78 H25, the original water tank was located on the centerline, aft of the icebox. A previous owner has replaced the original tank with a 25-Gallon bladder bag in the same location. Could you get a triangular bladder bag to fit in the area under the V-berth? That may be a bit easier than trying to get a hard tank in the same spot, and would be easier to clean (take it out and take it home!). I seem to recall seeing those at West Marine... --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Two suggestions:

Call Ronco Plastics for a tank catalog...they offer more than 400 shapes and sizes, including over 100 that are non rectangular. 714-259-1385 Read the article in the Head Mistress forum Reference Library (on the forum home page) called "Fresh Water Maintenance"...it explains in detail how to clean out your fresh water system.

Janel: The orignal water tank on our H25 was on the centerline aft of the icebox. It was a bladder.

H25 Water

The water tank on our 1983 H25 is on the centerline, aft of the icebox. It is "accessible" (choke, choke) through the starboard lazerette, and is a bladder. If you installed a triangular blader in the V berth, wouldn't it add to much weight up there, and cause you to plow nose down?

My 78's is plastic under cockpit floor

I am not the original owner. The water tank is a plastic rectangular fit tight under the cockpit floor aft of the ice box. Strange though, the fill is on the tank side with access from the starboard cockpit locker. Anyone now how to find an H25 forward hatch?
