I checked the archives and noting directly answered my question so... I am getting ready to rebuild my Lewmar 7 winches. I purchased the re-build kit (springs/grease) and learned about building a container to catch flying parts upon disassembly. I tried for a couple of minutes to remove the circlips holding the drum on without much luck - and without ruining the clip. What is the best way to get these clips off (and back on)? Thanks!!

A small flat screwdriver works

That's the tool that Lewmar shows in their illustration for servicing one speed winches.

removing the clip

I had serviced Lemar 8's before and it sounds like the same type of clip. I took a small flat head screw driver and used it like a lever to gently pry the outer ring out far enough to locate the end. I then held the end with needle nose pliers and carefully applied enough pull to get it to the top of the groove. I then uncurled it from the winch. Putting it back on is much easier. The Lemar web page might have a photo of the unit. Good luck.

removing the clip

I used a small flat head screw driver to act as a lever and gently pry the outer ring away from the unit until I found the end. I held the end with needle nose pliers and carefully uncoiled the clip over top of the unit. It comes off in a spiral. Re-assembly was easy. Good luck.

Follow the spiral

I used a very small flat head screw driver. Put the head under the end of the clip, and simply follow the spiral.
