I'm looking for info on a removeable wheel system I can retrofit onto my '01 Hunter 320 for the purpose of removing the wheel while in slip or at anchor.

All help appreciated,

Steve

We just remove the nut

and slide the wheel off. We then velcro it onto the bimini frame on the side.

The first time you do this there may be corrosion that'll make it difficult to remove. After you clean everything up it should come off easily.

For those with concerns about not being able to steer immediately should an emergency crop up:

1. I can put the wheel back on in less than 15 seconds.

2. We can steer with our underdeck AP without the wheel on. This is also significant should the cable/chain let go and an argument for having an underdeck AP rather than a wheel pilot. I'm not dissing wheel pilots, they work fine, it's just something to consider.

3. If we're in dicey conditions we don't take it off.

It REALLY opens up the back end of the cockpit.

Rick has the advantage of a below decks AP. One feature of my Simrad wheelpilot is that it does not restrict removing the wheel. I have not seen the newer Ray wheelpilots but the older ones would not permit easily removing the wheel. Like Rick's mine comes off by hand and reinstalls in seconds.

If you want to attach to the rail, Edson makes a wheel knob which allows the wheel to be securely fastened outside the cockpit rail

Re: We just remove the nut

I've got a 430 and have removed the nut to see if the wheel could be removed. Is the wheel threaded on the hub or is it held in place by a keyway? I didn't want to force it.

Mine and all the ones I've seen

are a straight 1" shaft with a key.

I put a piece of one-wrap velcro around the shaft to keep the key in place when the wheel is off. Someone suggested just putting a dab of epoxy on the key to keep it in the groove. It sounds sensible so I think I may try it.

I also put the nut back on because that darn shaft is at just the right height for inflicting some serious damage in a, ahem, sensitive area.

well I spun off the wheel brake and took off the nut and the wheel came right off-thanks for the info. Still going to look into the edson quick release and the hanger for the rail.

thanks.
