At some point a diesel was added ot our 272 (I am quite sure it is not an LE). Now dead, hopeless. Anyone remove a diesel and are there any safety concerns regarding weight shift. I assume since it was a retrofit, should be safe. Thanks

Diesels were installed on standard ...
272s at the factory as well... And the spin is that the boat actually became bow light when the engine was installed .... but you are not talking more than maybe 200 lbs or so and it didn't really sit too far off center ... If you are going to add an outboard ... the difference is really marginal. Just figure it will give you all that space to store heavy stuff. Too bad you just can't rehab the old diesel. maybe a second opinion? My 272 came from the Cape. Vic "Seven"

.......if it affected trim much at all. While an outboard will half the weight or less, that weight will be about twice the distance further aft. This should leave the overall Center of gravity (and center of buoyancy of the boat standing in still water) in about the same place. As far as safety is concerned, I think the real risk would be ensuring that the shaft log and unused thru-hulls are closed up and sealed reliably.

Pulling the Deisel
I pulled the engine to rebuild it. I left the shaft in the boat. I than put a outboard on new bracket on the stern. I used the boat for three years before putting the rebuilt engine back. The boat(30'Jeanneau) sailed great.
