My boat came with a lectrasan system for waste treatment. I'm sure it's too old to be legal to use. I'd like to switch to a standard holding tank set-up but I'm not sure how to do it.
Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. The space occupied by the unit looks big enough for a holding tank. Fran, Pearson 365

Lectrasans are legal and work very well. You may need new electrodes or a mixer motor, but it is easier to replace those than to install a holding tank. Though, a lot will depend on where you sail as far as no discharge zones etc. Measure the space carefully because you may be very size limited on tank capacity. I can only fit a 15 to 20 gallon tank on board and so I installed an electroscan (new version of the lectra) as part of the hold n treat system. I like not being a slave to pumpout stations. But, if I am in Herring Bay or another NDZ, I can shift it to no discharge and be completely legal

Fran,

We swapped our holding tank for the ElectroScan and have not regretted it. Yours is just the previous model and I understand you can upgrade the electronics to be more like mine. The only place I know of around here that you can not discharge is Richardson Bay. Its even ok in the Delta. You might want to download the manual and see how it operates before removing it. It may just need a cleaning with muriatic acid and be ready to go again. As you are closer to fresh water, you might have to toss a small handful of salt in the bowl with every flush to pull the proper amps on the treatment stage. We do that. A 50 pound bag of salt costs $5.00 and has lasted us 5 years.

I would not be too quick to toss the Lectrasan, still one of the best treatment systems out there. It can be repaired (parts are still available) as well as upgraded...and with the EPA out to ban dumping of any kind, the Lectrasan will at least give you a week or more when you add the hold-n-treat and a holding tank for that...gives you a LOT of options down the road.

I vote keep it, learn about it and how to best use it. You will not be disappointed.

I agree, keep and use the lectrasan. And repair if needed. Ours gets occasional use and I always run the engine for amperage before flushing just to make sure I don't run down batteries.
