When I bought the boat it had an outboard with a tiller handle and was a pull start. When it died I bought a Yamaha 9.9 used and it had remote controls, no tiller handle. Wasn't sure how it was going to work out or how I would connect it all, but the price was right. I mounted the controls just forward of the lazarette on the starboard side. That worked out well because I normally sit on the lazaette. I can control the motor with my right hand and use my left hand on the tiller. The cables for the throttle are run through the lazarette. They are just flexible enough to do that. Far easier to control the forward/reverse and speed that when it was on the tiller handle of the motor. The only awkward piece is that in tight spaces where you need to turn both the rudder and motor for a tight turn, you don't have the tiller handle on the motor to use, you have to reach back and use the small handle on the motor itself.
