Remote controls for outboard

Does anyone know where I can purchase remote controls for a Tohatsu/Nissan 8hp outboard. I want to be able to control Forward/Reverse and the throttle from a single lever to be mounted on the tiller. About how much do these controls cost?

Remote Control

I have a remote control for my Tohatsu but it mounts to the side of the cockpit just below the stearn rail seat. It's out of the way for the most part but can be easily reached when docking. You should be able to get one at any Tohatsu / Nissan dealer. As far as mounting controls to your tiller I don't know of anyone that makes one and I'm not sure you would want one anyway. The control cables are very stiff and would restrict your tiller movement not to mention move your motor around when it was running and you were trying to steer. If one does exist Dave Condon should be able to tell you were to get it.

Dealer Is the Place

I agreee with E.J.L. response in that your sailboat or engine dealer should be able to handle this request. I have a H26 and have the single lever control mounted on the side of the cockpit just above the floor. Electric start is nice if you are going to have controls. Suggest you find someone who has installed these before. Mine was a standard system used for power boats. Dave Condon is a good source of info. Good Luck I wou

Which boat

Norman; In order to best advise you, which boat do you have? Is your engine electric start or just the pull cable start only. With this information, I will be able to help you further Happy sailing

More info...

I have the H23.5. I have called a dealer and it seems the system costs about $375 (w/o the control level??). I was hoping for something around $150.

I do have the electric start

I forgot to mention I do have the electric start. At this time, I don't care if I can start remotely or not.

Where can you get spare cables

My cables are in need of repairing, I have a 26.5 with a Nissan 9.9 outboard. I do not have a Nissan dealer in my area, and no dealer sells sailboats either. Was wondering if anyone knew of a dealer that sells just the cables for this type of setup. Thanks TJ

Controls

Norman; The controls are not cheap. It sounds about right for the cost but I do not know if the cost includes the cable bracket attachment kit too and the cables as well. Please find out and get back. As for the cables in response to the otherr request, the Teleflex series 3300 are the ones you need and you can get them most anywhere. Specify length Happy sailing

Do you really want to?

Dear Norman, When I first got my '95 H26 with Honda 9.9 I thought I wanted a remote throttle/shift lever in the cockpit. I priced the parts and they were over $300.00 plus installation. I procratinated because of the cost. I have a friend with an identical boat except he has a Tohatsu/Nissan 8hp outboard. He has remote controls mounted in the cockpit just in front of the motor. The cables are so stiff that they don't allow him to rotate the motor much, for tight turns getting in and out of slips. After driving his boat many times, I would not trade him set-ups. I have learned to back up my boat with one hand on the tiller and one on the motor and can do it with good results. I always dock stern-to when possible for easier boarding. By rotating the motor I can make very sharp turns and have gotten out of otherwise difficult situations. I would advise you to think twice before you spend the money. Ned Christensen Second Wind

Ned's Correct

I think Ned hit the nail on the head. With the ease in control, one can really swing the stern around, when needed. The stiff control cables really inhibit movement. I though I would really like my Merc with throttle control, but it has really taken a long time to become comfortable as to which way to twist for fwd/rev. However, I often back out of the slip without the rudder down due to bottom weeds. I like the ability to really swing the motor quickly and freely.
