Remote control placement

Followon to Norm's inquiry: problem I have is, where to install the remote? I've seen pics of 240s that have a side mount model, installed starboard on the cockpit backrest - this to me is the most natural place to put it, except for not being able to lean back comfortably at that point. But, looking from underneath, there's a solid mass of blown-in foam behind the backrest, so I'm puzzled as to how these installs were done. Did they dig out a bunch of that foam to make clearance for the controls and cables? I checked with my dealer and he said he's been installing them in the stern side kick panel directly under the tiller. I think this is an awkward position, but definitely an attractive option. My thinking is to avoid drilling into fiberglass altogether, and bolt a panel to the stern seat rail and mount the remote to it (with a little prettying up of course). Anybody have any other comments about how their's was done? Thanks, Brian

Hey Brian

I keep checking in hopes that this question gets answered. I like the details of the autopilot mounted on the starboard stern seat in the forum; but, unfortunately, I don't have remote controls for my outboard, so I HAVE to sit there. Thinking about putting it on the other side in a mirror image to Ron's idea. I don't normally have anyone sitting that far back under power or sail; and it wouldn't inhibit the swim ladder since NO ONE uses that unless we're stopped and the autopilot would be disconnected. I would have concerns about mounting it on a panel and attaching it to the stern seat supports because of stability; but I'm not basing this on experience. I don't know what kind of forces are involved in the autopilot. If you try it and it works out, let me know. Where do you sail in Dallas?
