Remote control hard to work

I have a single handle/dual function remote made for a Tohatsu 8hp 2-stroke engine. The remote is getting harder and harder to move back and forth to the point that my wife can barely do it. I have the cable routed with a minimum 8" radius. It's a 1995, so maybe the cable needs to be greased (how would you do that?); or maybe something else needs to be lubed? Many thanks.

motorcycle cable lube

Try motorcycle cable lube. It includes adapter to force it into the tubing. Got mine moving even with a break in the tubing.

Check these first:

I'm assuming it is the shift function that is binding and not the throttle? If so, first disconnect the shift cable at the motor to isolate the problem to the combo lever and cable. If the problem still exists, inspect the cable for crimps and bends. Try lubing the cable as described by Kevin. If that doesn't fix it, you musy take the cover plate from the shift-throttle assembly off and inspect the internal workings. Lubrication is needed here, too. These cables don't last a life time because of the stress of pushing the gear selector. Good luck.
