Release agents

I am going to be using Marine-Tex (epoxy based putty) to make a small repair adjacent to a threaded machine screw. I don't want the Marine-tex to accidentally bond to the screw. Would a silicon spray such as McLube or Sailcoat work as a release agent for this purpose? I don't want to use a thick release agent because I want to be able to have nice crisp threads cast into the Marine-tex after the screw is removed. Thanks

The short answer is yes. The longer answer is almost anything will interfere with the bond. You could use just a little oil or liquid soap or cooking spray.

If you have the right-size tap, the best fix might be to simply remove the screw, do a really good repair job, then drill and tap the hole again.

A thin film of just about any oil or grease is enough to let the screw release cleanly.

Maybe put some teflon tape around the threads of the screw just in case

Wrap the screw first with one layer of teflon tape or saran wrap.

Wow, 4 responses within 30 minutes it's like real time. It must be raining where you guy live too. Thanks for all your answers. I've already made a proper repair with a heli-coil insert. This part of the fix is more or less cosmetic. Thanks again for your quick responses.
