Registration numbers

Just pulled the old registration numbers off my boat and left some serious imprints. Not sure if I should use gelkote before applying the new ones. Any advice? Thanks in advance

Try buffing with rubbing compound or 3M imperial ???

3m polishing compound, followed by a nice coat of Finesse-it, and wax will get rid of it.
