Is anybody headed down to the Abacos for "Regatta Time in Abaco"? (July 3rd thru July 11th) We would love to hook up for the crossing, parties, back-up, etc. Let's discuss it. Check out the link...

Ya Mon

We are leaving from Hillsboro Inlet on the 28th. Several boats from our club will be heading over, some doing a night crossing and others like ourselves doing a day crossing. If you have never done this regatta before you are in for a pleasant surprise. Best time you can have legally. Carl

Outstanding...

First time crossing in a sailboat! I have ran across several times in a power boat (long story, but I'm back), anyway, I want to get a discussion going here and get a group from this discussion group talking. Can I get out of Hillsboro Inlet with a 52' mast? If I remeber right, it has draw bridge, but the guide says the current and shoaling are treachorus for anybody without local knowledge. Well I would love to come down and follow a local out. That wouyld give me a much better angle on West End than Lake Worth!

Register

Dont forget to send in your regatta entry form by the 15th of June to save a little cash. Hillsboro inlet is not as bad as it was since they dreged it a few years back. The biggest danger is the weekend warriors because the bridge opening is somewhat narrow. No problem with the clearance, as it is a draw bridge. Carl

Great

I have been worried about the Lake Worth to West End Crossing because of the south feature, Hillborough would be much better. Leaving on the 28th, are you not worried about clearing in on a weekend or are you planning on clearing further down the line?

We will probably go right thru westend and stop at Mangrove for the night, then go to Spanish key, then thru to Greenturtle and check in there. Carl

Been there done that. It is great.

don't forget to make the crossing in a zig-zag course. Head southeast on the fringes of the "Stream" then when you get to the center where the strongest currents lie don't fight them and go northeast with it. Once on the other side of the center go back to a southeasterly course. Your departure point and your final destination, and wind speed and direction and the strength of the Stream will determine tha actual courses to stear by and the length of each leg. Zig-Zaging will allow for a faster and much easier crossing. No sense to beat against the current when it is at its strongest. A night crossing insures your arrival to Bahamian waters during daylight hours. Once you get to West End you still have two good day sails ahead of you to reach the Abacos. Once on the shelf we do not like to sail at night as you cannot read the depth and the charts are not very accurate. Enjoy.
