Refurbishing my Nisson NS5B questions

as much as i WANT a new engine i probably dont NEED one. looks like my 86 Nissan 5 is going to have to last a few more seasons so i am going to "refurbish" it. note: i can't see as i could do much more with a total tear down complete rebuild. the engine runs pretty well but has issues bogging down it seems like. i am at 5000' altitude so i went form an 8 to a 7 pitch prop, got a "Power Thruster", (haven't installed it yet....has anyone got any input on these? the anticavitation "theory" is sound enough...), bought a carb kit and am about to do that, and also advertised on the classified page for a service manual. (anyone got an old one?) i am trying to avoid running premium gas but does anyone know what octane is recommended for these engines? also:
-what is the best 2 cycle oil to run?
-any recommended fuel additives?
-did i read that there is a product to run through the engine to decarbonize rings and i assume reed valves?<P> -i'm thinking of going to a 35:1 vs a 50:1 oil/gas ratio....thoughts?
-who has the best prices on nissan parts? (i've bought from ITG Marine) i think if i had this engine "reliable" i would be satisfied with it. she aint pretty but when it chooses to run well it is plenty hp for my h23. its the bogging down, wanting to die if i throttle-up, threating to have me dock under sail feeling that scares me. (+ my new first mate next season will be my new grandson :) thanks~ william

since i can't edit my post.....

....what's up with that? i'm registered. must i have to be logged in WHEN i post to be able to go back and edit it? anyway, a correction is: i am considering going to a LEANER oil/gas ratio....not a richer one. right now i run 50:1 and am considering using less oil....say about 65:1.

Carb kit

William, I think that your first job should be to rebuild your carb and replace your spark plug. You shouldn't have to do much more to the engine if you were using the correct fuel mixture and off season layup. However, your best option is to take the motor to an authorized dealer for a check up. You can then decide to do the repairs yourself or have them do it. I use this method all the time and found that most mechanices are happy to explain the problems and even give advice on how to make the repair - after all, they are betting that you will thing it is too difficult a job to do yourself. In addition, they know you will buy the parts from their shop anyway. Just something to think about.

Nissan

Nissan is built by Tohatsu. The biggest problems could be the carb and/or power pack. If you are getting spark, then your electrical stuff is fine; however, change the spark plug annually. Since your engine is a gas and oil mix, the jets and so forth will clog if not cleaned out for winter storage. The best thing you could do is take the carb off and apart. Clean everything with carb cleaner. Remove all screws and parts and spray liberally into the fine ports. Put back together and you will find the engine runs much smoother and with more power. Make sure you change out the lower gear housing oil with new lubricant.

Manual for the Nissan

William, This link should take you to the manual for your engine (if not, go to nissanmarine.com then to tech talk then look for online manuals) Good luck! Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer

Power Thruster

We have the same model of outboard and I put on the power thruster and it made a big difference. If I remember right I had to put it on a little bit different because the the plate that it bolts to. Make sure its lined up properly, the same on both sides and that the bolts will clear as needed. The Nissan website has all the fuel ratio as well as there recommened oil type. Rob Morton

motor manual

YOu can also reference Tohatsu as the engine is identical. Nissan engines are built by Tohatsu with the only difference in color and decals

fuel addatives and decarbonizer

thanks guys. yeah, nissan or tohatsu SERVICE/REBUILD manual would either one be just fine. Dave Crowley, the link you sent me is more an owners manual vs a service manual like i am looking for although it seems a bit more comprehensive than mine so its copied, saved, printed, and in my boat binder....thanks. i've already changed the plug and have a new coil/wire coming. although i have spark i think i will put on the new coil and keep the old one as an emergency spare. (i also keep a spare plug, the old 8 pitch prop and attaching parts. am going to get an impeller and seals and another carb kit after i use this one to keep as spares on the boat also) i changed the plug last season and will change it again before next after i rebuild the carb. (the carb and kit are on my workbench as we speak). will also flush and clean the external tank but there are no inline filters that i know of to change. i may flush and get a new petcock/selector assy for the built-in tank too just so its functional but for now it is disconnected and has never been used....and is rusty inside. i imagine the nissan site recommends nissans own "brand" of 2 stroke oil but i will check. i am looking more for something i can find anywhere that comes recommended from people that have actually "been there"....amsoil, merc, etc. also, what about fuel additives? i have heard of stabil and sea foam, (and acetone?), but have had no personal experience....and, most importantly, i have read a couple of times i think of a spray-through decarbonizer that frees-up stuck/carboned rings and reed valves. anyone know of such a product? i've never been a big fan or seen great results from spray through type cleaners but am willing to try to learn new tricks. (old dog that i am :)). i am no stranger to engine rebuilding and/or mechanicing either although mostly on 4 strokes so rebuilding my old nissan is more like fun than actual work....i'm a little strange like that... thanks for all the input~ william
