I have a problem with seal on my 2001 Hunter 380 Fridge/freezer lids not sealing. I have replaced the gasket and it is worse. I'm thinking that the easiest/better solution is to remove the hinge and make the lids drop in. That may make the seal a little easier to deal with.

Anybody got any ideas or other solutions??

My solution......

I had a similar problem with the refrigerator and freezer lids in my h40.5.

After replacing the factory gaskets with new ones and still having leak issues, I installed additional gasketing.

I used Frost King brand EPDM rubber weatherstripping. It's available at most hardware stores and it is manufactured in several sizes. It has contact glue on it but I used additional contact cement to hold it in place.

The addition of this type of weatherstripping was most effective.

The other action that I did was to evaluate the location of the gaps at the gasket area. I did this using a borrowed ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. This item is used for automotive vacuum leak detection as well as air leaks in gaskets. The transmitter is placed inside the refrigerator and with the lid closed the receiver is used to "sniff" along the gasket. Where there is a gap or leak, the receiver detects the high-frequency sound and emits a beep. This tool allowed me to find out exactly where the gasket was not sealing and then I could concentrate on improving the gasketing in that particular area.

You may be able to borrow or rent such a device from people in the business.

Regarding your idea to remove the hinges and let the lids drop in place- that wouldn't work for my front-loading door, and the lids that I have are quite heavy. It does sound like a good idea, but I have a feeling that it would work out in practice very well. Just my two cents....

Thanks, I have removed the new Hunter gasket, $37 worth, and put in gaskets from Home Depot, $23, on the fridge itself and it seems to be working much better. I now have no gasket on the lids. This seemed to be the easiest simplest solution. The lids are heavy so making them drop in will be a last resort.
