Refrig Spring Replacement

The refrigerator spring on my 1998 352 broke and I never really liked it...It has hurt a few people as it can close with the slightest touch.

Has anyone replaced it with something better?

Thanks for the suggestion of using a gas shock but I currently have an actual spring, I will look into converting to a gas shock.

Measure your spring and shop "Sea Dog", they sell an exact spring replacement. Train the crew to trip the spring, and not force it down like a gas strut.
