Hi all - anyone here ever re-finish their winch drums? I was thinking about getting them sprayed with awlgrip in a flat-black finish. What are your thoughts, you think it would hold up - especialy in the drum? Perhaps I could bring them to a hot-rod-shop and get them chromed. Thanks - Rob.

Paint them black and

they will get too hot to touch in the summer sun. Have them chromed and they may be too slippery to hold well. A little worn and well used looks nice and salty. You can see lots of boats that look new because they never go anywhere. Is your boat for show or for go?

I don't think any kind of paint would not be

worn off. The properties of the finish on a winch drum are actually pretty tricky. It's gotta grip the line sometimes and let it slip others. Probably best to reproduce the existing surface if possible if current conditions affect operation. Some winchs actually work a little better with some age on 'em.

for go

but always trying to spruce things up some! Thanks - I'll stay away from trying to refinish them.

that re-chromes or whatever the finish is. Annapolis Plating I think.
