Refinishing water damaged interior wood H33 2005

My H33 didn't have a dodger so the right side wall down the companionway got damaged by rain over time. I'm installing a dodger this year but I'm looking for suggestions on refinishing the wood.

I read in the forum that someone used Liquid Gold but I'm not sure that would bring back the finish. I figure steel wool followed by some sort of varnish but I want to make sure I match the original finish.

Anyone else have to deal with this issue?

Follow up to my original posting...

I used "Scott's Liquid Gold" on the water damaged wood and the results were quite impressive. I guess the oil in this product sinks right into the wood and the water marks disappear. I am really impressed with this product as it's going to save me a lot of work. I wasn't looking forward to refinishing the wood as I don't know what product was used originally.

For now I will stick with it and see how it ages.

Hello Maurice,

Had the same problem with the wood on the companionway. First sanded it with 150, 220 and finished with 330 by hand to keep down the dust. Wiped with alcohol. Then lightly rubbed on some Minwax Cherry 235 stain (buy the tiny can) to color the wood a bit back to the teak color. After that, masked it off and used Mohawk ultra bond ultra flow clear spray to recoat the wood as mentioned in the Hunter 356 Manual. A couple light coats did the trick. But get some heavy duty breathing apparatus and cover with old sheets; the spray dries rapidly so over spray is not a big problem. It is not perfect but an absolutely incredible improvement. It took about 8-12 hours total.

Example of ease of use: the teak edge binding on the aft stateroom door was torn, damaged and loose. Removed it and glued on some new edge banding. In the process you wind up sanding a bit on the adjacent parts. I thought it would be necessary to respray the whole door but this product produced an unnoticeable repair, spraying back only about 3 or 4 inches; amazing.

This is a lacquer so it is not the greatest for durability but it is designed to touch up the interior wood without being noticeable. So I'll just keep after it. Also a sliding hatch cover cloth helps.

Oops, forgot to mention the PO had sloppily put some kind of varnish over the original finish which made matters worse and sanding harder. Don't know what the Hunter finish is but the varnish didn't stick well. The Mohawk spray seems to have adhered well. Just keep after it and keep it dry.
