I've totally replaced all the exterior teak on my H22 and since it's all new unfinished wood I was wondering which finish will hold up better, teak oil or a spar varnish/urethane?
I use this product on all the exterior wood of my H260 and I can not understand why anyone would ever use anything else.I am constantly seeing magazine articles about the pro's and con's of different varnishes & oils. With work that's so labor intensive, I wish someone would explain to me why there is such an interest in these "old world" materials.Just for the enhanced "UV" protection from these newer, synthetic materials I would make the switch.
...the best. Cetol looks fine, it's easier to put on and lasts longer. I've been on Bob's boat, his woodwork is excellent but It just does not have the depth that urethane has. Then again there are many that like the look of Cetol better. Bob, did you use Cetol Lite or origional? alan
I would use Cetol - I love it and did all my exterior wood last year (5 coats over bare wood). This year I will give it a maintennce coat in the spring. Teak wood looses its natual "non-skid" ability so if you have teak decks you may want to use something else or go bare. My Catalina 30 has mostly decorative teak so it is fine for me. Teak oil just does not hold up for exterior wood....fine for indoor applications.Good luck - Rob
I used the original Cetol which comes up a lot darker and more brownish/red then the lite. I believe this is caused by the additional iron in the Cetol which forms the basis for the "UV" protection. I will eventually buy a can of lite to try it.Regards,Bob
