I am getting ready to refinish the teak on our boat, not to much on it really. I have used Cetol in the past and they said to put a clear coat over it. I didn't really like this. It never really hardened up but stayed a little soft even some months later the crib boards still wanted to stick together.Do you have to put this clear coat on or can you just apply the base coat? Cetol says to use the clear coat but I don't really know. I looked in the archives and this wasn't addressed that I could find. Any comments would be appreciated. Only one more sailing day left, we have to pull out Sunday. (Tears) Well at least I'll get some of the things fixed and cleaned up. Never time to really work on it when you can be sailing. Thanks in advance. Rob

Cetol

Rob, I've used Cetol on much of the exterior teak and other wood on my boat with great success. 1st I sand the wood down 'til its smooth. 2nd I add 3 coats of Cetol, letting each coat dry completely and sanding lightly if necessary between each coat. I've really had good luck with the stuff. Never used anything on top of it though. Jim Schaff s/v Savannah

Epoxy/Eurethane top coatsystem?

I read an article in Sail Magazine last year regarding refinishing teak (I can't find the D*mn magazine to quote). They used West System epoxy as a base coat on the teak and topped it with a urethane top coat. The theory is that the epoxy has excellent protective capabilities but is not UV resistant. The eurethane top coat protects the epoxy from the UV rays. This two part system is common practice in painting offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and it works well on steel from first hand experience. I was just wondering if anyone besides Sail magazine has used this system on teak.
