refinish

The question is if it needs refinishing or cleaning and finishing. To refinish, you would strip/sand all the finish off and then apply your finish. On the other hand, if the surface is dirty and slightly warn w/o black (mildew) marks etc, you may want to clean, scuff and apply a finish. If your floor is not damaged, you can just use steelwool (or 3m) 000 or 0000 and buff out the finish. This will leave a fine mesh of scratches that the new poly and bond to. You may want to use a water based poly as it is clear blue vs clear yellow of oil poly.

Bin there done that

I did mine on a 1992 hunter 35.5. I took all the boards out and laid them out in my garage at home. I sanded down with a random orbital 150 grit. The teak veneer is thin but I never had an issue going through. In order to get a good finish you need to remove all the old stuff and get back to bare wood. I then applied about 4-5 coats of epiphanes (sp) marine satin finish varnish and they looked like new. It is also a very durable finish much like a hardwood floor finish. Make sure you vaccuum /clean all the dust and try to let the air settle before you apply the final coat. I did sand lightly between coats to get a better adhesion and cleaned and dusted. I tried to fill some of the dings with filler but that was a waste of time as the color match was off and they looked more obvious. The swiffer dusting cloths are good for the final wipe. It was a winter job. Good luck

We did it 2 years ago

We have a 93 40.5. We redid our floors 2 years ago and they came out like new. Hunter suggested the following product (which they use on their boats) and it worked: Daly's ProFin You have to get it from their website which is: http://www.dalyspaint.com/catalog_conditioners.html We sanded the wood between each coat (5 coats) with fine sandpaper. When it's time to do it again, we will absolutely use the same product. Couldn't be happier.

Just did it a few weeks ago...

I also did this recently using Untimate Sole. I am very happy with it. Don't worry so much about blowing through the verneer by sanding, like Don said, you have to get the old surface off completely and get to bare wood. Just don't go crazy. Leave the belt sander on the shelf. I used 220 grit and a small rotary sander until the surface appeared "clean". Although some discoloration or staining might not be completely removable, it will brighten up considerably with sanding and hopefully it will blend in well enough. I removed the hatches and refinished them in the garage. The rest of the sole I did in place on the boat. You get a lot of bang for your buck doing this project. It makes a big difference in the appearance of the boat. Good Luck.
