i tried to use the quick reef system on my 88 cat22 yesterday. i released the boom vang, the down haul, the main sheet, and the main halyard. i pulled on the quick reef lineand the front of the sail came down, the back sort of came down but not all the way and the boom was sagging. i didnt get to tie the 3 reef points down , it was blowing too much to mess with it for too long, so i gave up and raised the main and sailed under main only. is this normal? it seemed like the boom shouldnt sag so much. any input is appreciated, besides telling me what i aready realize, i should have tried it before i needed it, lesson learned....lol.......thanks, jeff.

Boom Topping Lift

If you have a boom topping lift (its a separate halyard that attaches to outer end of boom), set it when bending on the mainsail to hold boom up. Then loosen a little so that it doesn't intefere with sail shape while sailing. Then snug it a little before lowering mainsail to make your reef. Mine is not a jiffy, so I lower main, tie down front of sail (2nd grommet) with a small line that I always leave in there (it also serves as a cunningham to tighten luff (front) of sail along the mast), then move to tighten the leach (outer part)(also has a short line in 2nd grommet all the time). The loosen the boom topping lift and sail on. Probably takes a couple of minutes. Jiffy may be quicier. Dick

Jiffy Reefing?

Jeff; It sounds like one of two things. 1 you didn't pull enough on the reefing line, or the line is too long to pull the leech reef cringle down to the boom. So now that you know things aren't quite right, fix it at the dock on a calm day. Mike

Boomkicker

I use a Boomkicker on my Capri 18 to hold the boom up when reefing or motoring with the mainsail lowered. Something (topping lift, rigid boom vang, Boomkicker) needs to hold up the boom while jiffy reefing, otherwise it's very difficult.
