23.5 Reefing The Main I have a 1995 Hunter 23.5 and I need to know how to reef the main. At the boom where it connects to the mast there is what I will describe as a ram horns. Does the sail connect to the hooks when you reef it? Also there are two ropes that are through the sail at the reefing point, what do I do with the ropes? Do they tie around the boom? Can you tell where I may go to get information on this Hunter’s owners manual does not help.

reefing and the manual

Yes, the ramshead hook hooks through the forward reef cringle on the sail. Yes, the two pairs of ropes that hang from the middle of the sail tie gently around the boom to tidy up the sail so it doesn't flap aorund. The manual has a whole page with "REEFING" at the top, and two pages later it shows how to run the reefing line through the boom, around the aft sheave, up to the aft reef cringle and then down the the bale under the boom where it ties off. The diagram is labelled H19 but it's the same for our boat. A good trick is to find the point where you lower the main halyard that allows the rams hook to be inserted in the sail, and mark the line near the clutch with a permanent marker. That way you can drop the main to that point and cleat the line before going up to the mast to insert the hook. ...RickM...
