Reefing systems

oh Hello Albin Vega group,
i just have purchased a beautiful Albin Vega No 1263 just over a week ago in Holland. Now she is a beautiful boat, i had her out sailing the last few days and it was a cracker (No so much steering her backwards out of the box 'ouch' a few 360's before she found her way - got that now) and also living on it is awesome.

Now to the point : the boat got not really any reefing system, not even reefing hooks so everything has to be tied - which i found challenging and time consuming in a f6 by myself. Plus the shape of the main isn't really all that great afterwards.

I was thinking about leading the main halyard and the first two of the reefs back to the cockpit, i haven't got a halyard winch at the mast anyway so that would make things easier again.
Is there anybody who has done that ? and what do you need ? is one winch enough ?

Hi and congratulations on your new boat! She's definitely a beauty. You'll probably get a variety of great advice from people on the forum. While some people have had the lines running back to the cockpit for some time, I only recently ran them back this year. I installed two winches on the cabin top backed by starboard top and bottom. Forward of the winches I installed locking cams. I've been out testing the system in various weather condition, including the slab reefing, which I also ran back to the cockpit. It all seems to be working very well.

If you don't have roller reefing, which was standard on the Vega, slab reefing is a great way to go. Even with roller reefing, I much prefer the slab reefing, which I've had for several years. There are a variety of pictures of the setup to run the lines aft, most somewhere in the photos section. I did the slab reefing conversion first a few years ago, then did the lines to the cockpit this year. I installed double blocks to route the reef lines aft, which run through deck organizers before they reach the locking cams.

If you want, I can draw out the slab reefing and line situation, then shoot some pictures the next time I'm on the boat.

check out Peter's picture album (SinTacha) for some good reef pics. There are several different variations on to cockpit in the pics.
