I'm new to sailing and have had one rough sail with too much sail up. What is the best sequence for reducing sail in a hunter 23. I tried sailing under main alone but found it difficult to tack. My only headsail is a 110% hanked genoa. I'm thinking about buying a smaller headsail.

Up wind

Here's what you need to do. Bring your boat into the wind, release your mainsheet. Release your main halyard to the point that you can attach the web or d-ring on the luff of your main to the rams horn at the gooseneck. Tighten your clew and pull the line in for your reef point on the leech of your sail. Tie off the mid points if you want. Haul your main halyard up as far as it will go, cleat it. then sail as usual. You will need a smaller jib if you don't have a furler. I have a 1997 H26 and I always reef at around 15MPH and reef my furled jib at 18 to 20MPH by 3/4. Good luck!
