Our pulley at the base of the mast is broken. It is used for hauling down the main to the first reef at the clew. I cannot see how to remove this pulley short of cutting it off. I can cut out the pulley and leave the rotating shaft embedded in the mast base. Then replace with a pulley with one where I can push a pin through this shaft hole. Is this the only way?

Thanks for the tip. It turns out the very page you referenced answered another question I had, which was how the bottom mast sheaves are held in place (no visible cotter pin or spring for the sheave shaft). Great site. I'll be ordering from them.

My question was about a pulley (block) that is mounted outside the mast at the base. It is on a swivel pin, but there is no obvious way to replace the block on it.

thanks again for the reference site

the shaft that goes into the mast has a nut on it. Check directly below the shaft, there should be a slot (I thought they where weep holes) that captures a nut which screws into the shaft. To take the shaft/block off just unscrew it. the nut will then slide (may have to pry it out as the fiberglass flexes upward into the slot over time) out.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I don't recall seeing any kind of access.
