reefing my H 30

Last weekend we had an unusually warm day and took out the boat for its shakedown. winds kicked up to 30kts on my wind indicator. I had already reefed on the first ring and went to shake out the reef and set the second one. This boat seems to have a bad design flaw for reefing. To reef I had to remove a couple of sail slugs to get the reefing ring on to the rams horn. why would they make it that way? am I doing some thing wrong? well I lost the sail slug nut (which prevents the slugs from coming out when taking down the sail) and had a whale of a time getting the sail on deck when it came time to lower sail. anyone have an idea? You may need a mainsail modification

I have same model boat, but haven't had this problem. It could be your mainsail design. I suggest you have a sailmaker look at it. BTW, being able to reef that big mainsail conveniently is a good safety feature. I converted both reefing points on mine to single line reefing. Now I can reef the main by pulling one line without leaving the cockpit. That's handy when single handing.

Jack Line

Talk to your sail maker or loft about adding jack lines to the main luff. This will allow you to reef without taking the sail stop out. Bob S/V Gravyboat

Too windy

If, Ed, you mean by "last weekend" Saturday, March 24, it was just way too windy. I was across the Peninsula on the York on my 29.5, double reefed. The wind was gusting to 35 easy and blew out five of my sail slugs. Lost my new wind vang, too.

You got that right ...way to windy but a good shakedown. Do you sail down our way to Gatling Pointe YC or Smithfield Station?

Back to you, Ed

I don't get down to Gatling Pointe, but look for my colleague John Edwards who sails a 30-foot Catalina when he's not running his excellent Smithfield Times.
