reefing lines

we have recently acquired a legend 43 and the boat came to us unrigged. I am looking for information on the reefing lines for the main. I have two bitter ends exiting the end of the boom plus the outhaul. At the mast end of the boom I have one bitter end and one long length of line. I am sure when it all goes together it will make sense to me but for now I want to make sure that when it is time to shorten the sale everything works and is in the right place.

Gerald,If you have a single line reefing system, then one of the lines exiting the aft end of the boom is for your first reef. It should feed through the first cringle in the leach (which becomes your clew) and then tied off on the boom. Similarly, the second line (The longest line) is your second reefing line and should be set up the same as the first, but on the opposite side of the sail.At the mast end, the first reefing line should pass through a block (I do not know the name, but one with two blocks - one smaller than the other) at the base of the mast, then back up and through a block mounted on your sail which becomes the tack of your first reef. Then back down to the base of the mast through the second block, through your organizer and then the clutch in the cockpit.The second reef is set up the same way.Peter MilneS/V Blue Heron
