On my 87 H23,I have a Z-spar boom with channels for three lines inside it. Two lines are there (outhaul and topping lift) but the third was missing when I bought the boat. Is this for a reefing line? Any suggestions on how to run the line through the boom? thanks.

3rd line

My 90 did not have a topping lift line when I purchased, only a reef line and outhaul. Drill out the rivets on the front of the boom, remove the end, run the line and re-rivet.

Reefing Line

The 3rd is a reefing line. I used an electricians snake rather than drilling out rivits and re riviting. Gary

Shouldn't be a problem

The aft end of the boom on my H23 is practically open. Running a reefing line for my boat would be pretty easy; First, let the topping lift out far enough to allow the boom to sag. Then, start to pass the reefing line through the open jaw on the forward end, and it should pretty much fall out the other end. A little wiggling and snaking, and your reefing line will come out over the third sheave; then run through the reefing eye on the leech of the sail and back to a bail on the boom. Presto! Your reefing line is run, without even taking the boom off the boat. --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' H25 'Adagio'

knot it

What's the purpose of running the line back to a bail on the boom? Can't you just knot it on the other side of the grommet?

2:1

Mike, you could just "knot it" but then you would have 1:1 purchase. By running it back to the bail, you now have 2:1 purchase. If the wind starts howling, you'll appreciate the extra purchase! Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

The reason you should remove the goose neck

Joel, The topping lift and outhaul are already in the boom. The outhaul is a 3:1 block system inside the boom. If you snake the reef line through without considerable care you run the high risk of fouling the out haul. If you run the reef line through the outhaul rig, neather will work properly. It's best to remove the cap and work the line through carefully. Removing the gooseneck end isn't hard and replacing is a snap or rather "a pop", I guess. Greg H23 Faster-

forgot about the 3:1 in the boom...

Thanks for reminding me, though, Greg! My 23 doesn't currently have a reefing line, but that's one of the projects I've been meaning to do... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' H25 'Adagio' (Yes, I AM clinically insane- I own two boats!)

Hey Jon, reefer madness - again

Hey Jon, Even though your 23 is on the way out (no?), I've got a excellent reefing line mod for the 23 if you're interested. It really improves the main's performance when reefed, look very good and facilitates the reefing process as well. Greg H23 Faster-

Reefing line mod

Greg, Could you post details of your reefing line mod here for us? Also, I thought I read somewhere earlier in the forum that you redid your topping lift. Do you have any specs on that? Lenghts, fittings, etc.? thanks

Joel (and others) How about......

I guess I could take pictures of everything this weekend and post in the forum. It’s just that I hate to put up what I’ve done and am doing as any kind of definitive answer to our rigging issues. Anyway, I can do photo’s of the following – 1. Adjustable backstay 2. Genoa tracks 3. Winch pedestals 4. Topping lift mod 5. Mainsail reefing mod 6. Boom vang 7. Cunningham 8. Adjustable jib tack. 9. Lazy Jacks 10. Electrical Panel 11. Sink Pump 12. Mast rake 13. Snag proof jib sheets 14. Oversized jib blocks 15. What else? Greg H23 Faster-

No topping lift

On my '88 h23 "Obsesion" I don't use a topping lift, instead, I have a reef line and the outhaul on my Z-spar boom. the boom has three space for 3, but only comes with 2. We call Boqueron our "San Francisco Bay" conditions part of the island, puff's are the only constant there, so reefing is more important than having my boom attached to a topping lift. But, anyway's I would like to see those photos too.

Joe, how do you hold up the boom?

Do you have a rigid vang? It must be exciting to sail an H23 under the conditions you describe. I have sailed larger boats in big wind and waves, but haven't done it yet in my H23. I will probably have to wait until the fall, as the summer winds around here are way too light, unless of course a hurricane blows up... :-o Peter S/V Raven

Ok , I got a few pics

and posted in the photo forum in no particular order. I still need: Vang Cunningham all interior Mast stuff (I've got to re-read my old notes on architectural photography) I'll try to organize into articles when complete. We can use this thread for questions. Greg H23 Faster

Thanks Greg

Thanks Greg, your photos are great! I'd like to ask two questions: 1. How are your forward mooring cleats anchored to the deck, the factory arrangement is awful. 2. Your reefing mod includes the cheek block and halyard exit plate? The set up on my '87 h23 is pretty poor. The reefing line passes to the aft end of the boom then forward thru the boom. This fails to pull the reefing grommit down to the boom. I just wanted to clarify your arrangement. You could post or e-mail your response. Thanks in advance. Mark Penumbra mpelst@fast.net

Mark - 23 answers

Mark, Mooring cleats are through bolted with backing plates. I made the plates from SS cut to fit and match drilled to the cleats. To mount, position the cleats and drill through the deck. Install the bolts and go below. Below, cut the carpet where the bolts come through and pull back a little of the carpet. Slip in the backing plate and add lock washers/nuts. Cut excess with Dremmel and heavy-duty cutting wheel. Re-glue the carpet and the whole thing pretty much disappears from below. I posted a full (but probably confusing) description of the reefing system a few weeks ago. Look for "A better reefing system - for the heck of it" or something like that. Good luck Greg H23 Faster-
