The outhaul line for my mainsail reef point: The line comes out or the boom, up to the foot of the mainsail reef point, runs through the hole, and down to the mast, tied about 3/4 of the way down the boom. My question: Why not just tie the line to the foot of the sail at the reef point? What's the advantage? Thanks for the education.

reefing leverage

My first thought would be that the two points provide a much tighter reef. Pulls the sail down AND back.

If you tied the line to the foot of the sail only

then it would only pull back and not down, thereby inducing a very, very large belly in the sail and would defeat the ability to draw the sail down and tight to depower it. Ray s/v Speedy
