Reefing Cat 30

I'm having a bit of trouble with the jiffy reefing (ie, not single line) on my Cat 30: 1. To get the luff reef cringle down to the boom, I've been looping a sail tie through the cringle and through the d-bolt below the boom. This allows me to pull the cringle down. However, I'm finding that the sliders in the mast track (that attach the sail to the mast below the cringle) stack up about 4" so this is as low as I've been able to get the cringle. In addition, the bolt that holds the sliders in the mast track is about 4" above the boom. Therefore, the luff cringle in the reefed position is about 8" above the boom – seems too high, and causes problems when pulling the leach cringle to the boom. 2. To get the leach cringle down to the boom, I tie a bowline around the boom, thread it through the leach cringle, and down to the block mounted on the aft, starboard side of the boom, and then tie it off at the cleat forward on the boom. Two problems: (1) While the block is on an externally mounted track that can move forward, it still seems too far aft, especially for the second reef cringle – thus it pulls the sail back (rather than down) at around a 45 degree angle. I once tore the sail at the mast track while trying to get the leach cringle to the boom. (2) Because the luff end is 8" above the boom, if I pull the leach cringle down to the boom, the boom rises up 8" at its aft end. This seems odd – presumably the boom should remain horizontal? Can somebody give me a heads up on this? I'm sure it's pretty simple! I have seen the diagram in the Cat 30 owners manual, but that hasn't helped. Thanks, Tom
