Reefing and outhaul

For some reason the original owner removed the reefing system and outhaul from my 30T. I have Cunningham hooks but the shives are gone from the end of the boom, and nothing is in the boom but hornets and bird nests. I see that I can put the system back together thru a store called Rig-rite but why was it removed? Did it not work well? Is there a better option?

Those are good questions.... sadly we may never know the answer.

Put them back and enjoy your boat.

They broke and the PO never got around to fixing them?
No outhaul? How is the clew secured?

Pics would be good.

I wish I knew, It takes some effort to remove, so there had to be a reason. With a back and slight motility issue I am trying to bring everything back to the cockpit. All the turns greatly increases the effort to involved, so I was concerned that the original set-up proved too difficult. I can run it outside of the boom possibly with slightly larger line and shives cutting the friction some...just not as fancy. That is why I asked the forum how they felt about the original system. I just connected the outhaul by looping it thru a large pad eye that had been placed at the end, underside of the boom.

PICTURES!!! I don't know how that out haul "[on the] underside of the boom" would work. The lead sounds very strange.

It doesn't work, just keeps the sail attached, It just attaches the sail to the end of the boom. I need to fix the whole mess, I can find replacement parts (amazingly for a 27 yr old boat), I just want to know if the original reefing system works well on a '92 Hunter 30T, or should I put together something else.

Don't ever think that you are in any way confined to Hunter OEM parts for anything....

Of course the orignal reefing system worked well, it was designed by a rigger. Put it back together the way it was designed, new sheaves, new blocks, pay careful attention to specified line sizes. Owners mess these systems up because they don’t understand how they work, or how to use them. Don’t be one of those guys.

@Rxsail

Tim McRorie with All Seasons Marina at Lake Norman can help you. He has worked for several Hunter dealers and is well known in the area of Lake Norman as the guru working on Sailboats. Call All Seasons and talk with him. He represented Hunter for me there for a while and worked with former Hunter, Catalina and Beneteau dealers there when there use to be dealerships at Lake Norman.

Those little jammers built into the bottom of the gooseneck fitting are the scourge of sailors everywhere. Remove them, and lead the lines aft to clutch. You’ll be much happier.
:plus: some sort of cleat will also be better than those jammers. On a boat as small as yours a clutch might be overkill (certainly will do the trick though).

If it's simplicity is the issue -- try a small cleat mounted to boom. You have a H26... If you think this too small, use the 5" instead of the 3" one. You can find metal ones too.
