Reefing a Self-Furling Sail

We are looking to buy a new 22 MarkII and right now the factory is giving away to self furling system as a boat show special. Question: we have been told you can reef the sail in by pulling the furling retractor rope - other people tell us you have to fly the sail fully deployed. We sail in an area that can have limited wind or gales -having only one head sail will not work well. If we get a 150 Genoa and can roll it part way in a sail with it this way it would be OK. So can you reef a furling sail (CDI brand) Thanks Rik

Yes!

I have used a CDI FF2 furler on my C22 for 3 seasons. I have a 150 genoa on it. I have used it rolled up to just about any size imaginable, and I'm pleased with its performance. If the winds are right for the 150 and the lakes not over crowded, I use the 150. If there is a lot of traffic, and I want the best visability of other boats, I roll up to about 135%, and I can see under the foot of the genoa. As winds increase, I roll it to a 100% size and it works great. I've sailed with a double reef in the main, and had the genoa rolled up to about 60 - 70 % and it performed well. My genoa was made by Airforce Sails, now called FX Sails, and I bought 6 oz. dacron and got sunbrella instead of the less expensive UV cover. I wanted a heavier fabric because the reason I was buying the furler in the first place was to be able to reef the genoa and sail in stronger winds. I also bought the foam luff, which allows the genoa to be reefed and still hold its shape. The CDI FF2, which you'd get retails for about $400. My genoa cost around $600. If they offer the lighter, cheaper genoa, you should ask about upgrading it.
