We purchased our 1994 Hunter 26' used this spring. We were out this weekend in fairly gusty conditions (up to 22 mph). We started to reef the main and there was no reefing line in the boom We were able to use an alternative system, but it was not the best setup. Is it difficult to install the line in the boom one and is there a certain type of line that should be used? Thanks in advance for the help. Monte Brown

Monte, If you have a Hunter owners manual it will

the line placement in the boom. Our 95 H26 has the standard factory supplied mast and boom. On the boom the port line channel is for the topping life. The center channel is for the mainsail outhaul and the starboard channel is for the reefing line. This line is by far the longest line of any on the boom. Your manual will give you the line size and length and will also include a drawing of this set-up. You take the reefing line from the aft end of the boom up through the first clew eyelet about 6 to 7 feet up the aft end of the mainsail and then down to the boom underside sliding line eyelet. The sliding eyelet is in-front of the of the slider. To reef you lower the main and hook the tack reefing eyelet on the rams horn fitting at the boom gooseneck. You then pull the reefing line tight to secure the aft end of the mainsail to the boom. Then secure the mainsail foot material to the boom with the ties attached to the sail. Hope this helps. Or...

You can simply take the boom off, set it up vertically at a stairwell, go to the top of the stairs, and send a messenger string using small nuts or other weights.
