reducing speed in the marina

I recently came into the marina much faster than I wanted. I had a strong wind at my back and putting my 9.9 Tohatsu in reverse didn't help much. Are there any other techniques for slowing down?

S turns

A common way to dump speed is to do a bunch of quick S-turns, providing you have the room to do them.

Need More Info

It's a bit unclear.. where you under sail? If so turning up into the wind will do the trick.. If not, you just have to anticipate further out, slowing down etc.. the 9.9 in reverse should do the trick if utilized early enough, unless you are dealing with 25 knot plus breeze, the 9.9 should work if applied early and turning into the wind when possible could help increase contol where you could back down if the bow doesn't swing around on you ???

Sail or Power?

If under sail, I like to furl the main and use the jib only, just let the jib all the way out early to slow down, but without an engine in reverse you must head into the wind to stop the boat. If you were under power only, do you have an outboard? If so it sounds like the propeller is not far enough down in the water to provide enough thrust. You may want to do a u-turn into the wind just outside the marina entrance, using the wind to slow you down then head down wind and go into reverse very early! Hope this helps... I learned to slow down sooner, it's a big boat

I bought a 1995 Hunter 26 in January. My first 10 times of coming on to the marina I wondered why people came running down to help. Then I bumped the dock a couple of times. Recently I needed to put in reverse and only had a few seconds. It had no effect. What I learned is that I needed to slow down. I put the motor in idle, but keep it running in case I need power for forward or reverse control. Then I coast very slowly to the dock. No more folks running down to help. I must look better. It's a big boat, take it slowly. Heavy side wind? Good luck, I'm not there yet!
