I am refurbishing, rewiring, redoing the mast on my H23 for the season....and seasons to come. looking at the way the spreaders mount to the tangs on the mast with a single #10 machine screw doesn't excite me. does anyone know why i can't redo this system with 2, 1/4" bolts through each spreader/tang? there's plenty of "meat" on the tang and and spreaders, and room to space the holes. i assume the spreaders need to be sweap quite equally as tension put on them by the shrouds would be uneven and possibly tend to twist the mast if i didn't get them the same. (maybe this is the reason for the single screw?) i'm assuming i could get them real close but how exact is exact enough? a little bit off at the tang/mast end could be an inch or two off at the end of the spreader tip.

crazy dave

no reason why

Without looking at pictures, I have drilled thru the spreader base and spreaders to install stainless bolts. Two suggestions. Use a non metallic washer on both sides. Secondly, cut the bottom of the bolt off and put the end cap nut on so rigging and sails will not be ripped on that end of the bolts.

Thanks Dave...

I've already filled extra holes left in the spreaders by the PO with marine-tex and faired them in. will lightly sand as there is allot of chips and wear and then paint w/ epoxy. I was going to use ss washers and self locking nuts but i'll put nylon washers next to the spreaders, (under the ss washers), and locktite an acorn nut on the bottom side. THEN i'll be satisfied that some things may still fail but one of them won't be the spreader to mast connection. i guess call me "crazy" too as its probably the same oem #10 screw thats still there after 19 years and its still working...but then again i just got new rigging too....one size up! william
