The wife and I were out on the country road last night walking the German Shepherd. She noticed the cows were all up and eating facing the same direction. She looked at me and said we should go fishing. we have always been told that when the cows are up and eating in the same direction the fish are biting! Here are some others I grew up with:

When the cows are up and eating in the same direction the fish are biting!
When the cows are laying down so are the fish.

Red sky at night sailors delight.
Red sky in morning sailors take warning.

When you hear the train whistle you will have rain in three days.

A ring around the moon means rain soon.

What did you grow up with?

It seems there are a lot of sayings about fishing

When the dogwoods bloom the crappie are spawning

Always fish with the sun in your face

Fish a silver spoon when the sun is bright, a gold spoon when its cloudy

Tales from the Country

I grew up in the mid-Hudson Valley on north-south oriented ridge with the train tracks down (400' - 600 lower elevation) in the valley a mile or so to the east of us. If we heard the train whistle the rain would be imminent - and probably last for 3 days!

My maternal grandfather, a farmer, swore that the trout would only bite when it was raining. My father's brother, a cop from New York City who came to the country to hunt & fish his whole life, would bust Pa's chops by saying the only time farmers went fishing was when it rained and that they couldn't know that a man could catch fish when it wasn't raining.

I had a great uncle who was a hunting guide in the 19020's & 30's. He died when I was about 6, but I heard he once convinced a city slicker client that he could smell a rabbit!

I recently found one in a travel magazine that has quickly become one of my favorites.

Egypt. "Never mount some random guy's camel," says Kara Lucchesi of STA Travel.

Now, I've always considered this sage advise but apparently some tourists need constant reminders.

Too much thought?

Maybe, someone could shed some light on this one. I never understood the "Red sky @ night" saying, because the sky is red because of sunlight reflecting off of precepitation. The sun sets in the west, and the wind and weather typically come from the west. So, it would seem to me that a red sky at night would mean that there is precipitation on its way (and that a red sky at dawn, from the east, would mean that the weather had already past).

The small-mouth bass fishing starts when you see dandielions.

According to the Library of Congress

Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.
Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

I'd rather be in a boat with a drink on the rocks, than be in the drink with a boat on the rocks. But you all knew that.....

When you can see the underside of the leaves on the trees, expect rain soon. (not a good one for boating)!

Thanks for the thread, fun reading....
