I plan to sand and re-stain all of my interior woodwork and trim. Pro's and con's on clear coat afterwards... same question for exterior teak... any reason not to clear coat it when finished?

Before you use any clear coat check out Daly's Sea Fin. It is a great finish and is very durable. It was used by Hunter until they started doing the newer interiors.

Easy to apply and refinish as needed.

I prefer a clear coat. It is much easier to maintain. On the exterior just make sure that it is UV protected. I also keep my exterior wood covered with canvass. The rails covers go on easy with Velcro an just pull right off. I also have a canvass cover over the sliders and hatch door. I haven't covered the brows yet but will get to that this season. The covers are easy to make using Sunbrella supreme. It is a soft backed Sunbrella. On the interior of the C27 I used teak oil only because it was used by the PO and I don't have the time to sand it down (I'd rather go sailing). The interior doesn't get the exposure so it last longer between touchups. The interior of the Lugar 30 was varnished and it was easier to sand and re-varnish. It looks clean and fresh.

You might want to investigate tung oil as an interior finish. Its easy to use, relatively green and healthy and lasts well. I have been using it on my interior for years. Info here.

A lot of good responses. Thanks! My previous boat had clear coat and this one doesn't and it also had snap on sunbrella covers for all exterior wood, hatches and the hatch door...hence the question on pro's and con's. I do plan to make covers as I get to it. Ya'll have given me some good ideas to think about. Will keep you posted and thanks again.

Just be real careful not to leave any rags with tung oil on them lying in the boat. Open them up and lay flat on the ground.

Yup. Good safety advice. Any kind of oily rags can support spontaneous combustion. Linseed oils and tung oil contaminated rags should always be properly disposed of...

my experience with tongue oil in the mid-Atlantic region is it becomes moldy requiring frequent cleaning. I switched to min wax Helmsman. Love it.
