A red light came on at the nav station today for the first time . It is indicating the there is reverse pol arty .I turned off the shore power and it went off. Is this a bad thing or A good thing I never had this before

Bad thing! Bad thing!

You've got the dock end plugged in backwards. Or worse, you have a short. In either case, your breakers will not operate correctly and power may still be live even if you switch the breakers off. This may cause fire or shock due to your short, etc. Leave unplugged until problem is diagnosed and solved.

Reverse Polarity

Did this happen where you normally plug in, or at a different location (marina, slip)? If you have plugged in at this location before without the reverse polarity light, what has changed? As Jeff has pointed out "do not use in this condition"!

Google Don Casey and read

his articles on electricity, and buy a book or two about boat electrical systems, and learn what reverse polarity means and what you need to do to deal with it.
