I have a boat that may need to be shipped internationally from USA to US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas). Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with international shipping or shippers I could contact for quotes? This would be my first time shipping a boat. Would it be cheaper to use one shipper to Miami and a second from Miami-St. Thomas? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yacht Path

Tim, My boat is on a Yacht Path International (http://www.yachtpath.com/) ship right now enroute from La Paz to Victoria. They've been helpful and friendly to deal with, and they took care of getting her loaded. They hired a local captain to do it, since my schedule wouldn't let me be there. I won't know what condition my boat is in until next week when I take delivery, but I don't have any major concerns. I can report back at that time if you want. I also tried Dockwise (http://www.yacht-transport.com/). They are more well known and their desireable sailings were full. Fortunately Yacht Path still had space and later when their ship filled up they added another ship due to the demand. Craig Luker

Dockwise

We used Dockwise into Ft. Lauderdale and were very pleased with the whole operation. Not Cheap but you can get up to a 20% discount by booking early. You can also wait till the last minute and get an even greater reduction IF they have room. If they don't...then you may end up waiting some months. But if you CAN wait, this may be a good strategy. They stop in the VI's and Martinique in the Caribe and go all over the word.

Yacht Path report

I took delivery of my boat from Yacht Path last week. It went smoothly and professionally. The local rep in Victoria was good to deal with. The boat was in good shape but I did have to go up the mast to re-attach the stay that runs between the mizzen and main mast (what's that called?). They had to disconnect it for the spreader bar of their crane. Of course that wouldn't be an issue for anyone with a sloop. The unloading time kept getting moved around because of a conflict with other ships that were in line to use the dock. That was a bit frustrating but not unexpected when dealaing with shipping at a busy port. Loading/unloading somewhere like La Paz where there's lots of room in a protected harbour so they can do it at anchor rather than tied up to a commercial dock, would likely make that scheduling easier. I'd use them again. Craig
